Time to warm up our brains!

Today we will be looking at finding the duration of something, e.g. a t.v. programme, a lesson or a journey. This is a concept that will be new to the children. Using a number line will help them to calculate the duration as using the column addition or subtraction method will not work for time.

When using a number line, it can be easier to go to the next half or hour mark first, e.g. find the difference between 10:20 and 11:30:


                  10 mins                          1 hour

10:20 ---------10:30-----------------11:30

10 mins + 1 hour = 1 hour and 10 minutes

Below is an example of how to use a number line to calculate the duration of something. Practise finding the duration of the other two programmes.

Choose which level (1 star, 2 stars or 3 stars) you would like to do and complete in your maths book.
