WARM UP

WALT: Create different forms of poetry

This week we are going to create our own dragon poems. Over the next couple of days, we will look at 3 different poem types. Today we are going to start with  a 'What Am I?' poem.

A 'What Am I?' poem is similar to a riddle. In the poem, you are describing the look or characteristics of the animal without saying which animal it is.

Take a look at this poem:

The above poem describes the characteristics of the snail. It says 'He cannot hop. He cannot run at all.' because he has no legs! How might you describe the movement of your dragon?

Another thing you might have noticed is the rhyming couplets at the end of each stanza (this is the verse of a poem). 'All' rhymes with 'wall' and 'go rhymes with 'slow'.

TASK:

You are going to write a 'What Am I?' poem for the dragon you created yesterday.

Think about what you dragon looks like - does it have sharp fangs or large wings - and how you dragon might move or act.

Don't forget to send your poem to learningyr4@victoriaparkschool.co.uk!
