Manchester's Museum of Science and Industry Trip
We had an excellent day out at the Science & Industry Museum - luckily, managing to dodge the showers! As well as exploring the museum, we took part in some workshops about Forces and Properties of Materials.
Here, we used our Properties of Materials knowledge from this year to decide which material had been used in an 'explosion'. To find the right material, we had to look for these four things: rapid expansion, heat, light and sound. We looked at different solids and liquids before finding the correct material - hydrogen gas.
In this gallery, we put our observation and curious questioner skills to the test! Around the room were a variety of different experiments to complete looking at a variety of different topics from light and sound to construction and forces. 5S showed some great teamwork throughout their time in the gallery!
We completed our day with a very enthusiastic host learning more about Forces. We impressed him with our knowledge of air resistance and friction and we learned that every action has an opposite and equal reaction!
Sports Day 2023
Having managed to dodge the downpours, we made it to Trafford Athletics Track for a morning of track and field events. All the children competed in a 100m race, long jump and javelin. If the children wished, they also took part in the 400m race. Well done to Leila in 5S who broke the VPJS Year 5 Girls record for the 400m!
In the long jump, Bobby-Lee and Ama-Rose came join first with a jump of 2.65m. Leila was a close second with a jump of 2.62m and Liam came in third with a jump of 2.6m! Thank you to Elliot and Sienna who assisted in measuring and photography!
In the javelin (and battling with a cross-wind), Noah won the event with a staggering 9.7m, Liam came in second with a throw of 9.4m and Bobby-Lee, Leila and Maggie came joint third with a throw of 9.4m. Thank you to Rory and Bobby-Lee for assisting in measuring and photography!

Achievers of the Week - Moony, Leila and Maggie
Reader of the Week - Summer
Maths Star of the Week - Seb
We've had a busy week in Year 5 with lots of learning going on! In English, we've been looking at using precise language to help build a suspenseful narrative about The Highwayman. In Maths, we've continued our work with decimals looking at how to add, subtract and multiply numbers of different decimal places. In D&T we learned about food safety and why good hygiene is important when prepping food. For History, we researched the Islamic physician, al-Zahrawi, and learned about his contributions to medicine in the 10th century. Finally, in Science, we completed our experiment investigating the amount of friction different surfaces produce. We had a lot of fun with the newton metres, trying to work out which surface would provide the most grip for the sink area.
Monday 12th June - Friday 16th June 2023

It's been a hot week in deed! The children have coped well in the heat - please make sure all children bring water bottles with them to school and, if possible, a sun hat and sun cream, thank you!
We had an exciting day on Thursday meeting Burnley player and Manchester United academy alumni, Ella Kinzett. We completed a tough circuits class with her!
