Achiever Focus: Progress

Achievers of the Week: Maggie, Bobby-Lee and Romaisa

Reader of the Week: Romaisa

We've had a busy week in 5S learning more about the Ancient Greeks, beginning our final narrative of the term and looking at tenths as fractions and decimals. This week we also visited the British Muslim Heritage Centre and learned more about Islam. We looked at Islamic architecture and tried creating our own mosques using balloons! In our Values & Attitudes session, we continued with our theme of Equality and looked at what racism is and the foundation "Show Racism the Red Card". We had an excellent class discussion around the topic and talked about what to do if we ever experience racism. Finally, we enjoyed watching the Year 4 Christmas Concert and we were especially proud of the Y5 guitarists who performed spectacularly!

We've had a very exciting week in Year 5. From testing parachutes in science (checking for air resistance) to performing the djembe and ending the week with Maths Day, we've had many activities that have made us smile this week.

Testing the Parachutes

Monday 21st - Friday 25th November 2022

Achiever Focus - Determination

Achievers of the Week - Reuben, Maggie and Oliver

Reader of the Week - Yuvraj

What a great week 5S have had! In our English lessons we've been exploring all things reading, looking at inference skills and developing our oracy in answering questions verbally. We ended the week with doing some freeze-frames to show how August's (our main character) emotions change in a single chapter. In Maths, we completed our work on our first unit of Multiplication & Division and will begin Fractions in the next couple of weeks. One highlight of the week was looking at Ancient Greek artefacts and replicas. We used out inference skills to decide what the Ancient Greeks were like based on these.

Monday 14th November - Friday 18th November 2022

Achiever Focus - Teamwork

Achievers of the Week - Amy, Cham and Elizabeth

Readers of the Week - Leila

It's been another fantastic week in 5S. The children have worked incredibly hard in all areas of their learning. In English, we've focused on using 'show not tell' sentences to describe how our main character (August) is feeling on his first visit to a new school. In Geography we used secondary resources to learn about Isaac Newton and Galileo Galilei. In Maths, we have investigated finding common factors as well as squared and cubed numbers.

Equalities Week 2022

Achiever Focus - Equality

Achievers of the Week - Liam, Cham and Ella I

Readers of the Week - Bobby-Lee and Liam

This year, our theme for Equalities is "Same But Different". Leading on from our Home-Learning Challenges on culture, we are looking at how people experience the same things in their day but in different ways. The inspiration for our work is taken from these two books:

Our project is to make our own 'Mirror' book. Two stories of two children and what they do in a normal day. The first story is based on ourselves and what our daily routine is. The second story is based on a child in a country in Africa and what a typical day is for them.

We also learned how to write our names in Urdu (from Pakistan), Gujarati (from India) and Bangla (from Bangladesh).

To show that no matter who we are or where we are in the world, we created a piece of art to show what is the same for all of us.

Monday 31st October - Friday 4th November 2022

Achiever Focus - Co-operation

Achievers of the Week - Ama-Rose, Jaiden and Luke

Maths Stars - Elizabeth and Romaisa

Welcome back, 5S! We have had a great start to our second half-term in Year 5. This week in Maths, we completed our work on Addition & Subtraction focusing on finding missing numbers within a calculation. In English we began looking at the novel 'Wonder' and used writing features such as relative clauses and direct speech in sentences of our own. We had great fun in Science this week as we started looking at the topic of 'Forces'. We used balloons and water bottles to show the opposing forces of gravity and air resistance. We also made a start on our Ancient Greek topic in History, looking at when the Ancient Greek civilisation was and researching the differences between the rival city-states of Athens and Sparta.
