I can't believe we have reached the end of the first half term! I would like to say a big thank you and a massive WELL DONE to all in 5S. Everyone has worked incredibly hard over the last seven weeks and have shown themselves to be excellent pupils. I wish you all a wonderful and peaceful half term and look forward to seeing you back again, rested and eager for what the next steps of our learning will be!

Check out our amazing space-themed narratives from this week. We've had so much fun creating these stories!

Achiever Focus - Motivation

Achievers of the Week - Bonnie W, Elliot and Rory

Readers of the Week - Amy and Bonnie E

This week in our learning we have continued working on Addition & Subtraction in Maths, looking at inverse operations and comparing calculations. In English, we created our own alien worlds and have begun to plan a story based on our new planets. In Geography, we compared the human and physical geography features of New York State and the North-West of England. Finally, in Science, we completed our last lesson on Earth & Space, learning about why we have day and night. We looked at how telling the time has changed over time and made our own sundials that will (hopefully!) work when the sun comes back out.

Monday 3rd October - Friday 7th October 2022

Achiever Focus - Work to be PROUD of

Achievers of the Week - Leo, Sienna, Leila

Reader of the Week - Jaiden

There was lots of learning to be proud of this week! In Maths, we tackled addition and subtraction with exchanges. In English, we planned, drafted and created a final newspaper report based on the Moon Landing of 1969. In Science, we looked at the phases of the Moon. Did you know that there are 8 phases in the Moon's 28 day-cycle? See if you can tell which phase the Moon is in next time you look up in the sky! We continued our work using Excel in Computing by looking at how to add calculations to cells. Finally, in Geography we looked at time zones, linking our previous learning of longitude and latitude as well as telling the time!

Monday 26th September - Friday 30th September 2022

Achiever Focus - Positive Attitudes

Achievers of the Week - Max, Egheose and Amy

Reader of the Week - Bonnie W

It's been another fantastic week in 5S. In Maths, we finished our Place Value unit by completing some tricky problems both in class and on a treasure hunt in the hall. In English, we've learned about relative clauses and how to use direct and indirect speech ready for our newspaper articles next week. In Science, we looked at the orbits of the planets to see if we can find any patterns between a planet's orbit and its position in the solar system. In Geography, we researched 'The Rockies' mountain range in North America and created an information text persuading people to visit. In Computing, we have continued looking at using Excel and, this week, we have been inputting data into a table. Take a look at our work here:

Achiever Focus - Showing good Self-Manager skills

Achievers of the Week - Bonnie E, Maggie and Ella R

Reader of the Week - Reuben

We've had a great week of learning in 5S. Everyone has shown great research skills as we looked into Neil Armstrong for our biography writing, and the physical & human features of North America in Geography. In Science, we learned how in ancient times it was believed the solar system was 'Geocentric' (Earth at the centre) but then moved to the 'Heliocentric' model (sun centred) by scientists such as Copernicus, Galilei and Newton. Finally, in Maths we began our unit around rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000 and 10,000. Take a look at the tasks we were doing:

Monday 12th September - Friday 16th September

Achiever Focus - Respect

Achievers of the Week - Reuben, Amy and Jessica

Reader of the Week - Noah

It's been an exciting week for 5S as we started learning the djembe (African drum) in our music lessons. We looked at traditional and modern djembes and began learning the rhythm of a song. In English, we completed our diary entries in role as a young Chris Hadfield watching the 1969 moon landing. In Maths, we've been looking at powers of 10 and how they can help us find 10/100/1,000/10,000 more or less than a number. In Science, we looked at how the Sun, Moon and Earth are spherical bodies and, in Geography, we learned about some of the 23 countries that make up the North American continent.

Monday 5th September - Friday 9th September 2022

Achiever Focus: Positive Attitude

Achievers of the Week: Moony, Bobby-Lee & Summer

What an amazing first week back it has been! Lessons have begun to help us get back into the routine of school and the new 5S have settled in very well. In Maths, we have built up to looking at numbers up to 1,000,000 and understanding their place value. In English, we have read Chris Hadfield's The Darkest Dark and began writing our diary entries in role as a young, aspiring astronaut. In Geography, we have been using our map and location skills to understand latitude and longitude. Finally, in Science, we learned about the Solar System and the 8 planets that are part of it. Take a look at our super work from this lesson:
